What is hyperfocus?

Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder is often mistakenly perceived as a lack of attention, but that’s not true. I can target my attention extremely effectively in certain situations – especially when faced with novelty or challenge.

This is known as “hyperfocus”, and it’s when I do my best work.

A graphic of a large, light blue arrow pointing to the right like a flowchart.

Researching new topics fires up my neurones in a way that nothing else does. It turns my brain into a dog with a linguistic bone. This is one of the reasons why I’m a relentless researcher. Routine and repetition have the opposite effect, sending it off for a fireside nap.

Of course, I do have particular areas of expertise. I have a strong grounding in equality policy, employment, health, social policy, education and, of course, neuroinclusion. But I have lots of other interests too, from behavioural science to tech.

Need access to key facts and insights quickly?

The problem

We’re surrounded by microdistractions and overloaded by information. Focus gets interrupted, errors multiply and productivity declines. AI only gets you so far; there’s simply not enough time to find and verify all the information you need, and key details are easily missed.

The solution: Hire my hyperfocus

Here’s where my ability to hyperfocus holds its own.
Give me a challenge or a topic to research, and I’ll target my attention with laser precision, especially when tackling something new or complex.

My neurodivergence means I can spot patterns and connections others might miss – so I can put forward innovative and creative solutions for you to adopt.
My background is in equality and employment policy, health, social care, education and neuroinclusion. But my real superpower? Relentless curiosity and the ability to deep dive, fast, into any subject you need.

After years spent writing speeches, researching policy and drafting lines for politicians and officials at the highest level, I know what information decision-makers need – and how to deliver it fast.

What I offer

    • Rapid, high-level research and briefings on any topic, tailored to your needs.
    • Concise, actionable summaries - perfect for busy leaders, teams, or anyone preparing for a keynote, pitch or interview.
    • Free rein of my ability to recognise patterns and solve complex problems.
    • Clear, plain English communication that gets to the point - no fluff, no jargon.

Why hire my hyperfocus?

• Spare yourself the information overload and harness my laser-sharp focus instead.

• Get help making quick, evidence-based decisions.

• Unique insights powered by my cross-disciplinary background and divergent thinking.

• Set yourself apart: fewer errors, deeper insight, more synergies than AI can provide.

• Books, public archives, FOIs, conversations, intercultural insights, personal experiences… my research extends beyond internet browsing.

• When I’m looking for information, I’m unstoppable. No hallucinations here.

My research story

I caught the research bug at the age of 18, while combing through newspapers on reams of microfiche at Leeds Library for my A-level history dissertation. Later, at the British Embassy, my job was to brief ministers – busy people who needed key facts, fast. My briefs and reports had to be attention-grabbing and concise, yet offer political insight and recommended actions. That discipline shapes every briefing I deliver today.

Decades of freelancing has shown me that my brain’s need for novelty and challenge is an asset – not a liability. It’s what allows me to deliver rapid, reliable, and meaningful research for clients who need answers, not just information.

What my clients say

Helen Pennant, First Secretary, Labour and Social Affairs, British Embassy, Paris

Ruth is very good at spotting issues and emerging stories e.g. she identified the lycéens protest on bac reform as potentially leading to a crisis from the very start. Her work saved us significant time and helped us make better decisions.

Lilia Bongi, Biographer

Ruth went above and beyond what was required of her … she actually inspired me to add an additional section to my work, which has enriched the final product. She conducted research and drafted this additional section excellently, putting a lot of hard work into it.

Claire Blacka, Tenant Engagement Specialist and Insights Discovery Practitioner, Tentacles Consultancy

Ruth reviewed and edited content for my website. She took what I had written and made it a million times better! She added excitement, while still being professional, as well as finding relevant quotes and research. She was amazingly thorough and her hyper focus on the task she is doing is an absolute benefit to her customers. She has left me with a wealth of resources I will be able to use for months to come.
