One of the many great things to come out of the business coaching pilot organised by Rob Edwards and funded by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority, is the invaluable opportunity to connect with a mentor.
I was fortunate enough to be paired with Chris Naylor, an expert in What is Ethical & Sustainable Digital Marketing.
Chris shares my passion for inclusive communications and is going to help me develop my understanding of the part tech plays in this.
He shared some great insights on accessible content at our first session.
It was particularly eye-opening to learn about the use (and misuse) of alternative text.
As a translator, used to working with abtract concepts, I've always found describing images particularly challenging.
But there's no room for ambiguity when you're describing something visual, and it makes sense that clarity is particularly vital when you're attempting to accurately summarise an image in words.

It's striking to think how few companies put thought into ensuring their messaging is received by ALL of their customers, whether in the form of accurate alternative text for those with visual impairments, or well-written content for speakers of other languages.
