Today is World Creativity and Innovation Day and a perfect excuse to reshare my favourite TED talk of all time by the late Ken Robinson. The first time I listened to this I had no idea my brain was any different from anyone else's. Listening to it now with my knowledge about neurodivergence and having heard the stories of so many neurodivergent kids who were traumatised by their experience of school, it has even more resonance. If you don't have time to watch the whole thing, skip to 14.59 for the wonderful origin story of the director and choreographer Gillian Lynne.
Neurodivergent kids desperately need the adults in their lives to have the insight, empathy and foresight of the educational psychologists who met Gillian back in the 1930s.
I believe that the benefit of considering atypical brains in communications and processes far outweighs the investment. ADHD brains deserve more than home-made workarounds. Let’s work on the upgrade together.
